Comments: Established on February 16, 1790 with John Carter as its first postmaster. John Carter also printed the Providence Gazette; and Country Journal. He was apprenticed to Benjamin Franklin. IMPORTANT HISTORICAL FACTS: In the photo are the Old & New Providence Post Offices. The old Providence Post Office, Court House and Custom House was constructed in 1904 and occupied in 1908. Architects were Clarke & Howe. This building was listed in the National Register in 1972. The new Providence Post Office was constructed in 1940. In 1961, the Providence Post Office became the nation's first automated post office.
