Comment: Battle Creek Township. (Originally established as GARNSEY) on May 7, 1832 with Samuel Foster as its first postmaster. (Name changed to BATTLE CREEK) on May 8, 1834. Nedabiah Angell took over as postmaster on this same date. (Combined to one word BATTLECREEK) in 1894; (restored to two words BATTLE CREEK) in 1905. IMPORTANT HISTORICAL FACTS: The second Battle Creek Post Office (pictured) was designed by Albert Kahn, one of Detroit's most famous architects. Constructed in 1904. Dedicated in May 1907, this building was abandoned as a post office in 1968 when a new post office was built on 90 Mccamly Street South. In 1978 this post office became the Calhoun County Hall of Justice. This structure was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
