Comment: Wells Township. Originally established as ESCONAWBA #2 on June 28, 1864 with Alden Chandler as its first postmaster. Changed to ESCANABA on June 1, 1875 with David Langley, Jr as postmaster at that time. Still an active post office. It is important to note that the FLAT ROCK #1 Post Office was established on February 19, 1852 in Escanaba Township with Jefferson S. Bagley as its first postmaster. It discontinued operation on September 24, 1852. ESCONAWBA #1 Post Office was originally established on December 7, 1853. Name changed to FLAT ROCK #2 on June 28, 1864. Discontinued operation on July 20, 1864. IMPORTANT HISTORICAL FACTS: Construction started on the Escanaba, MI Post Office building (pictured) on June 30, 1906 and opened in 1910. In charge of the project was James Knox Taylor, Supervising Architect of the Treasury (1897-1912).
