Comment: Originally established as SALT LAKE in CALIFORNIA on January 18, 1849 with Joseph L. Haywood as its first postmaster. Changed to SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH on August 9, 1850. IMPORTANT HISTORICAL FACTS: The Federal Building and Court House in Salt Lake City was constructed in 1902 and completed in 1905, initially as a U.S. Post Office and Courthouse. This building in the photo is the oldest structure in Salt Lake City's Exchange Place historic district, and was designed by the office of James Knox Taylor, architect for the Treasury Department.
