Comments: Originally established in IOWA TERRITORY as NAPOLEON on March 2, 1839 with John Gilbert as its first postmaster. Changed to IOWA CITY on November 14, 1839 with Chauncey Swan as its first postmaster. IOWA became the 29th state in the union on December 28, 1846. The Iowa City Post Office pictured was occupied in 1904 and in 1981 became the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center. It is located at 28 S. Linn Street. Iowa City was the first permanent capitol in the Territory of Iowa, and the first capitol of the State of Iowa, the second seat of Johnson County.
