Comments: Originally established as MACKINAW CITY on April 25, 1871 with Louis J. Willets as its first postmaster. Name changed to MACKINAW on November 22, 1894. Name changed back to MACKINAW CITY on January 1, 1936 to present. IMPORTANT HISTORICAL FACTS: In 1634 Jean Nicolet was sent here by Samuel Champlain to explore this country. Became a fur trading post in 1673. In 1712 Fort Michilimackinac was established.
