POST MARK COLLECTORS CLUB - POST OFFICE PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION

Post Office: Stockton, CA 95208 (San Joaquin County)
Date of Photo: circa 1960
Contributor: Paul E. Petosky, Postmarks from the Past
Comments: Originally established in CALIFORNIA TERRITORY. Official postal service began with the arrival of Special Agent Allen, who in a report of August 29, 1849, noted that he had appointed a postmaster at Stockton in June 1849. Due to the time lag in communications with California, this appointment was not confirmed by the Post Office Department in Washington, DC, until November 8, 1849. So officially as of November 8, 1849, William Hopkins was its first postmaster. Changed to SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY on March 6, 1851.
