Comment: Battle Creek Township. Originally established as GARNSEYon May 7, 1832 with Samuel Foster as its first postmaster. Name changed to BATTLE CREEK on May 8, 1834. Nedabiah Angell took over as postmaster on this same date. Combined to one word BATTLECREEK in 1894; restored to two words BATTLE CREEK in 1905. IMPORTANT HISTORICAL FACTS: The second Battle Creek Post Office pictured was designed by Albert Kahn, one of Detroit's most famous architects. Constructed in 1904. Dedicated in May 1907, this building was abandoned as a post office in 1968 when a new post office was built on 90 Mccamly Street South. In 1978 this post office became the Calhoun County Hall of Justice. This structure was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
